Most Barely Legal video releases are in an vignette format, with a handful of narratively disconnected scenes. Early Barely Legal releases open each scene with some narration from one of the girls in the scene, reading a letter to the Barely Legal magazine where she recounts an early sexual experience.

Types of Releases
The Barely Legal series has accumulated a lot of releases over its 25 year run. From the earliest days, starting with Barely Legal: On Vacation in 2000, there have been spinoff releases. These are releases that retain the Barely Legal name and title treatment, but is outside the main numbered series. Most of the spinoff releases are lead by directors who do not direct the main series, though some (like B. Skow and Matti Klatt) directed spinoffs before "graduating" to the main series. Some of the spinoffs have turned into mini-series of their own, like Barely Legal Innocence, Barely Legal Corrupted, and Barely Legal POV each with more than 10 releases.
In addition, Hustler Video will at times put out a compilation of scenes from different Barely Legal releases, often centered on a theme, like Latinas, or Pigtails. These have been put out under various names, such as Barely Legal Classics, Best of Barely Legal and Barely Legal All Stars - although some compilations have no special title, like Barely Legal: Boobs.
