Crushee was founded by Annaliese Nielsen, Atom Smith, and Brent Akamine.[1] It opened up to the public on Christmas Eve 2013 after beta testing.[1] Users are known as "Crushees" and use actual names instead of screennames.[1] When joining, users must complete a profile with their information and photos for previously vetted users to vet by pressing "yes" on those they are in favor of, "meh" on those they're unsure of, and "no" on those they're against.[1] Users can't "crush" or otherwise participate on Crushee until reaching a certain approval rating through this vetting process.[1] When a user is crushed, they receive a notification with the username of the "secret admirer" partially hidden.[1] When a "mutual crush" occurs, the entire Crushee community is notified.[1] Mutual crushes are able to privately message each other.[1]
